Connecting busy New Yorkers to volunteer opportunities - and each other

University Soup Kitchen

Saturday September 20, 2003

Registration for this event has passed.

The University Soup Kitchen needs 6-8 volunteers to serve "restuarant style" meals to men and women of all ages.

Nativity Church - 44 Second Avenue (btwn 2nd and 3rd St.)

Timing, Duties, and Attire: Soup Kitchen volunteers must be 18 years or older. Volunteer duties involve helping to serve lunch and cleaning up. There are a variety of jobs, including waiter, busboy, traffic management, dishes, coffee service, etc. Volunteers should wear comfortable, sturdy shoes (no flip-flops), and comfortable but appropriate clothing (no short shorts, no little tanktops, etc). Also, volunteers should not bring valuables (jewelry, CD players, cell phones etc) that you can't keep on your person - there is a room to leave belongings in but it doesn't have a guard, so volunteers should not leave items of value there. Please arrive by 11:45 - a short orientation begins around noon. Normally, clean up is completed and the volunteers are done by 3:30. Volunteers are asked to generously stay until clean-up is finished. (Note that volunteers who want to work on food preparation can feel free to arrive anytime after 8:30am.) Location: 44 Second Avenue (between 2nd Street and 3rd Street). Take the F or V to 2nd Avenue (closest stop), the N,R or 6 to Astor Place, or the B,D,F to Broadway (Lafayette St.) at Houston. The Soup Kitchen is located in the Nativity Church. Proceed through the two iron gates, down the stairs to the back of the church. Ask for Lori and you will be assigned a job.
