Connecting busy New Yorkers to volunteer opportunities - and each other

International Center in NY

The International Center serves immigrants, refugees, international students, and other newcomers to the United States with English language training and programs in American culture. Each year, we serve approximately 2,500 newcomers, and manage a volunteer corps of more than 1,000. These collaborations, help spread the spirit of volunteerism and cross-cultural understanding in New York City's immigrant communities. We offer a wide range of volunteer opportunities to help members learn and practice conversational English, and gain the confidence necessary to communicate effectively.

We are also training volunteers to work with several community based organizations serving immigrants in different New York City neighborhoods. Together, we are helping them develop their own English programs, based on the Conversation Partner model but incorporating their specific needs.

Following the initial training sessions, the program requires a commitment of 2 hours per week for 12 weeks (flexible volunteer hours).
